Last year, I attended a number of events with small business owners. Each time that I discussed my background in international trade, many of those same business owners nodded that international trade sounded like an interesting topic. Their specific responses would vary from questions as to why international trade is important to how to start selling goods in foreign markets. The light bulb finally went off as to how I can translate my academic research and trade policy experience into something useful for the larger community, in this case business owners. I will simplify the complex international trade market for you, help you to understand how you can benefit from free trade agreements, and show you how to expand your growth potential in overseas' markets. But why should you trust me?
I have years of experience studying free trade agreements and free trade negotiations as well developing contacts with international trade lawyers, government officials and business representatives.
Currently, I am the president and CEO of the Global Research Institute of International Trade, a think-tank and consulting firm that provides analysis of free trade policies around the world and works with business clients to understand how free trade agreements can boost their bottom line.
As a former political science professor at North Carolina A&T State University, I have traveled to and lived in countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean studying free trade agreements such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the US-Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA).
My work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed academic journals such as Cambridge Review of International Affairs and Asia Pacific: Perspectives. I have received prestigious awards such as the Fulbright Scholar/Lecture Award, which I used to conduct research in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on the US-Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA). As a Fulbright Scholar, I also designed and taught a weekly seminar in Spanish titled, “The Politics of Free Trade” at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM). While my work continues to be recognized among scholars, it also has real world policy implications.
Prior to joining the faculty at NC A&T, I served as a trade policy consultant for The Services Group, Inc. in Arlington, VA. My projects entailed advising the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) on how to establish a trade management institution, analyzing the competitiveness of Southern African economies, and assisting with private sector development in the Eastern Caribbean region. These projects were funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
As a guest speaker both nationally and internationally, I have spoken with business owners, community leaders, government officials and students about free trade negotiations, the rules within free trade agreements, and how they enjoy benefits from these trade agreements that non-member countries do not enjoy. I am always excited to speak with groups about strategies that they use to take advantage of current free trade agreements and grow their presence in the international market.
I received a B.A. in journalism and Spanish at the University of Southern California. I completed my M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science at Brown University. (My full length CV can be viewed here.)
My in-depth academic and practical experiences that allowed me to develop a network of government officials, business representatives, consultants, etc. are the reasons why you should trust me to speak with your business or business group.
